How to Clean a Coffee Grinder: Burrs, Chute and Chamber

Coffee oils and fine grounds build up in the burr chamber and chute. Regular cleaning removes this residue. Disconnect power before accessing internal parts and follow the instructions for your grinder.

What builds up and why it matters

Coffee oils and fine grounds can accumulate on burrs, inside the chamber and around the exit chute. Residue can affect flavour and flow. Cleaning accessible parts as instructed helps keep the grinder working properly; it does not remove the need to dial in as coffee changes.

Daily quick clean

Switch off and unplug the grinder before brushing or reaching into accessible parts. Empty and dry-wipe the grounds catcher, and brush the accessible chute as the manual permits. Do not insert tools into a powered grinder. If a purge is recommended, reassemble first and use the prescribed operating procedure.

Cleaning inside the grinder

Unplug the grinder before removing parts. Follow the model’s instructions to access the burrs; some designs need service support. Brush removable burrs and accessible surfaces with the recommended dry tools. Keep water away from steel burrs, the motor and electronics. Reassemble correctly before reconnecting power.

Grinder cleaning tablets: do they work

Use only cleaning granules approved for your grinder, in the specified dose. Follow the product’s purge instructions before brewing. Standard grinder cleaners may not be suitable for the integrated grinder in a superautomatic machine. Urnex makes Grindz and Full Circle products; use the correct product and instructions for your equipment.

The rice method: avoid it

Do not grind rice or other household substitutes unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Unapproved materials may damage or clog the grinder. Use the approved dry-cleaning procedure or compatible grinder-cleaning granules instead; follow any required purge instructions.

Check the setting after reassembly

After permitted burr removal and reassembly, follow the manufacturer’s check or calibration procedure. Return to a brewing setting before grinding. A reference can shift after maintenance, so test the dose and grind before relying on an old setting. Do not seek burr contact unless the exact calibration procedure calls for it.
