Pressurised baskets add resistance through a restricted outlet. Non-pressurised baskets rely more on the coffee bed for resistance, so grind and preparation need closer control. Check which type your machine uses.
A pressurised basket or portafilter system adds an outlet restriction, often through a second wall with a small opening. This makes it more tolerant of pre-ground coffee and less precise grinder adjustment. Designs differ, so follow the machine’s dose and grind recommendations; an excessively fine grind can still obstruct flow.
A single-wall basket has perforations without the added pressurising outlet. The coffee puck supplies much of the resistance, so grind, dose and preparation strongly affect the shot. A suitable espresso grinder makes adjustment easier. Not every single-wall basket is a specialist precision basket.
A pressurised basket can be practical when using pre-ground coffee. A non-pressurised basket provides more direct control through grind and puck preparation. Neither label alone determines taste. Foaming and crema appearance are not reliable measures of extraction quality.
Check compatibility with the portafilter, group and manufacturer’s instructions. Use a dose suited to the new basket and dial in again. A different basket may need a different grind setting. Do not assume every machine can switch systems by replacing the basket alone.
Specialist baskets offer particular hole patterns, capacities and manufacturing tolerances. They are optional, and may change the recipe or preparation needed. Before replacing a sound stock basket, check your grinder adjustment, dose and cleaning routine.
